The next step up from the Opticon L-22X. A scanner that keeps pace with your workday.
If you've been working with the L-22X, you already know what a reliable workhorse looks like. The L-22XS takes everything that made its predecessor a solid choice and pushes it further — noticeably further. A more powerful scanning engine means faster reads, smoother responses, and a lot more forgiveness when things get busy and barcodes aren't sitting perfectly still.
The good news for existing L-22X users: upgrading is seamless. The L-22XS is fully compatible with your current setup, so there's no need to reconfigure your systems or change your cables.
What makes it stand out
Scans the way you actually work: In a real working environment, you're not always lining up a barcode with both hands steady. Items move, hands move, and things need to happen quickly. The L-22XS handles that. Whether you're scanning fast-moving products at a checkout, picking orders in a warehouse, or checking in guests at an event — it keeps up without missing a beat.
Reads virtually anything: From standard product barcodes to dense QR codes on small labels, the L-22XS handles a wide range of barcode types with ease. It also reads barcodes at varying distances, so you're not hunting for the perfect scanning angle.
Built for shared and hygiene-sensitive environments: The L-22XS comes with an antimicrobial coating as standard — not as an optional add-on. For healthcare settings, hospitality, or any shared-use environment, that's a meaningful detail. It also holds up well against static discharge, which matters in retail and industrial environments.
Ready to use, right out of the box: It comes with a stand included, so you can switch between handheld and hands-free scanning from day one. Optional accessories — like a longer coiled cable or a wall-mount stand — let you adapt it to your specific workspace without any hassle.
Looks the part too: Available in black or white, the L-22XS has a slim, modern profile that sits comfortably on any counter or service desk. At just 77 grams, it's light enough to use all day without fatigue.
Where it fits
The L-22XS is a good fit across a wide range of work environments:
- Retail — POS, price checking, stock management, loyalty card scanning
- Warehousing & Logistics — receiving, picking, and dispatch in fast-moving environments
- Healthcare — patient identification, sample tracking, medication checks
- Manufacturing — parts tracking and quality control, including in high-static areas
- Hospitality & Events — ticket scanning, mobile passes, and access management
- Government & Public Services — document processing, ID verification, library systems
Why the L-22XS is worth it
Scanners can be easy to overlook when budgeting — until a slow or unreliable one starts costing you time. The L-22XS sits at a level where you genuinely won't be fighting it. Reads are fast, the motion tolerance means fewer rescans, and the build quality means it can take the occasional drop (rated to 1.8 metres onto concrete) without becoming a problem.
For teams upgrading from the L-22X, the transition is as smooth as it gets. For new buyers, it's a scanner that will serve you well across a long product lifecycle — Opticon builds for longevity, not for frequent replacement cycles.

Technical details
IP Ratings (Ingress Protection)
A two-digit number established by the International Electro Technical Commission, is used to provide an Ingress Protection rating to a piece of electronic equipment or to an enclosure for electronic equipment.
The protection class after EN60529 are indicated by short symbols that consist of the two code letters IP and a code numeral for the amount of the protection.
Example: IP65 (NEMA 4)
The two digits represent different forms of environmental influence:
• The first digit represents protection against ingress of solid objects.
• The second digit represents protection against ingress of liquids.
The larger the value of each digit, the greater the protection. As an example, a product rated IP54 would be better protected against environmental factors than another similar product rated as IP42.
IP TABLE:
| IP.. | First digit: Ingress of solid objects |
Second digit: Ingress of liquids |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | No protection | No protection |
| 1 | Protected against solid objects over 50mm e.g. hands, large tools. | Protected against vertically falling drops of water or condensation. |
| 2 | Protected against solid objects over 12.5mm e.g. hands, large tools. | Protected against falling drops of water, if the case is disposed up to 15 from vertical. |
| 3 | Protected against solid objects over 2.5mm e.g. wire, small tools. | Protected against sprays of water from any direction, even if the case is disposed up to 60from vertical. |
| 4 | Protected against solid objects over 1.0mm e.g. wires. | Protected against splash water from any direction. |
| 5 | Limited protection against dust ingress. (no harmful deposit) |
Protected against low pressure water jets from any direction. Limited ingress permitted. |
| 6 | Totally protected against dust ingress. | Protected against high pressure water jets from any direction. Limited ingress permitted. |
| 7 | N/A | Protected against short periods of immersion in water. |
| 8 | N/A | Protected against long, durable periods of immersion in water. |
| 9k | N/A | Protected against close-range high pressure, high temperature spray downs. |
| Not Rated |
The device's IP for solid objects has not been rated. | The device's IP for liquids has not been rated. |
USB-HID
HID = Human Input Device ; output emulated like a keyboard.
The data is entered at the point of the cursor or current focus (in a form).
Language and keyboard selection need to match between scanner and host!
USB-VCP
VCP = Virtual Comm Port ; output is send to the assigned comm port.
In most cases a driver is neccessary!
USB-MSD
MSD = Mass Storage Device ; emulates storage like an USB-stick.
Plugging in the device in this mode makes the devices' internal storage directly accessible from your host.
In general in Windows you will see a pop-up/notification of a drive letter that has been mounted.
USB-OTG
OTG = On The Go ; enables the USB port to act as a host on PDA's/smartphones and tablets, allowing input from a keyboard.
The data is entered at the point of the cursor or current focus (in a form).
Language and keyboard selection need to match between scanner and host!
ETHERNET
Wired Ethernet connection via DHCP or Fixed IP.
Older supported protocols:
ActiveSync
Communication through Microsoft ActiveSync.
RS232
Communication through the wired direct RS232 protocol.
Wedge
Old style PS/2 connections for keyboard/mouse communication.
